Our 'Official' List of Shorebird Species

...And Why Some Birds are Missing

If you have already uploaded a photo to shorebird.org, or, if you have suggested a species for another user's photo, you will be familiar with our drop-down selection menu of shorebird species. We based our selection on a list by the official World Shorebirds Day web site.

Conspicuously absent from the list are many birds seen at the shore--gulls, terns, and pelicans to name a few. It's not that we don't want photos of pelicans, gulls and the myriad of other species beach goers see, but we have decided to base our list using the technical definition of a 'shorebird'.

Below is our full list of 222 species sorted alphabetically by common name. To accommodate the pelican, gull and other bird photos that aren't included, we also have the following option:

  • Other Bird Species (Not Listed)

When using the above choice, please leave additional information in the description field.

If you feel a bird should be on our list, please let us know in the comments section at the bottom of this page.

And as always, if you aren't sure of the species in your photo, you can select 'Species Unidentified', and other users will try to help you out.
